Alaska, Arizona Growth Model Pilots Approved by Department of Education
The U.S. Department of Education approved the growth model pilot proposals for Alaska and Arizona, bringing the total number of states participating in the pilot program to eight. The Department of Education has been implementing the growth model pilot program as a way to track individual students' annual progress for purposes of determining adequate yearly progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
Other states that have been approved for the growth model pilot program are North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Ohio. To be approved for the pilot program, states must submit detailed plans to the Department of Education on assessment systems that will be used to measure student progress. The Department plans to approve no more than 10 states for this pilot program.
CEC continues to advocate for a longitudinal growth model to be included in the accountability system to allow more focus on individual student achievement. This approach will allow educators to align curriculum and instruction with standards and assessment to better meet the needs of individual children - including those with disabilities.
